Birds and Bird Houses
Sometimes we get stressed out over little things in life and we head out to our gardens to work it off. Most of us that have the time will plant a few flowers, maybe some vegetables or even put a garden gnome by our patio. This in itself is relaxing however there are many ways to use garden décor to make your time even more rewarding than ever. Think about when you’re in your garden working, wouldn’t it be nice to be able to watch the birds enjoy your garden also? The problem is many birds won’t come around as soon as you set foot on the grounds. If they feel safe they will stick around and you can enjoy their songs and playful moods. This in turn raises your mood to relieve stress from your daily life by having a connection to nature at a higher level. To attract birds to your garden you will need some basic things every bird needs to sustain. Number one and foremost it must be a place free from predators such as cats, squirrels or larger birds. This usually can be accomplished with a bird house hung from a post or branch of a tree. Hang it far enough to the edge where they can see something coming far ahead of time and escape if necessary. Also keep it out of the direct wind and elements as possible. Next they will need a water source close by. This can be as simple as a bird bath or as elaborate as a garden pond, either way it will need to be a year round source of water. Finally they need food, which can be a simple bird feeder placed in an area that nothing else can get to it. Squirrels love bird food so keep it out of reach. After you have all these in place sit back and enjoy the show, usually within a month or 2 you will acquire a permanent resident that you can watch for years to come. If for some reason you don’t get a permanent resident within the first 2 months look at the area and maybe move the bird house to another section of the yard. Birds are uplifting to the spirit and can help you relax when you’ve had a hard day or week at work. Do this small change to your garden and you’ll see how it can change the way you think and feel.
